Israeli population tops 6m

The Central Bureau of Statistics in Israel says the country's population rose above six million for the first time this year.

It said of that number four-point eight million -- or seventy-nine per cent -- are Jews.

The rest are Muslims, Christians, Druze or registered no religion. 1998 also saw a continuing fall in the number of immigrants to Israel.
