The Tanzanian president, Benjamin Mkapa, has warned in his new year messagethat his country faces the threat of serious famine next year.
Tanzania's central bank has also warned of severe food shortages caused by adverse weather, hoarding, poor storage and pests.
The bank says a combination of torrential El Nino rains earlier this year and insufficient rain in the last two months has hurt agricultural production.
