Wall Street market report

US stocks open volatile with low market volume on the last trading day of the year.
Stocks edged up in early trading, but the Dow Jones index soon lost out again, down 19 to just above 9,250 points.
The technology heavy Nasdaq index managed to cling to its gains, up 4 to 2,170
Activity was light at 6.3 million shares traded with many brokers already off for the New Year's holiday. Stock markets were slated to hold a full session, but the bond market was scheduled to close at 2 pm New York time.
