A leading Guinean opposition politician is accused of attempting to overthrow the government

A prominent opposition leader in Guinea, Alphe Conde, has been officially accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Mr Conde, the leader of the Guinean People's Rally, was arrested a day after presidential elections earlier this month, in which he'd stood as a candidate.

The state prosecutor has alleged that Mr Conde recruited foreign mercenaries to oust the current government by force.

He's also been accused of attempting to leave the country illegally, and carrying out fraudulent transactions in US dollars.

The opposition has dismissed the allegations as baseless.
