Collins facing lay-off

John Collins - failed to hit top form this season

Everton midfielder John Collins is likely to be out of action for two months after deciding to have surgery to cure a toe injury.

The Scotland international will have the operation next week but could play a part in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie against First Division Bristol City.

"I have required an operation for a few months. I tried to play on with the pain but my form has dipped and I am disappointed with that.

"The specialist says it will be six to eight weeks, which is a long time and something I have not had to cope with in my career, but he's the expert," said Collins.

The 30-year-old cost Everton £2.5m when he joined them from French club Monaco last summer, but has rarely been seen at his best by Goodison Park fans.

"I have been playing OK, nothing more than average and the Everton fans haven't seen the real John Collins. I have been trying my heart out but I can play a lot better," he added.
