Chinese PM fears corruption in big dam project

The Chinese Prime Minister, Zhu Rongji has warned the builders of the huge Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze River that any negligence in the construction work will bring disaster.

He was speaking during a visit to the site of what will be the world's largest hydro-electric project on its completion in 2009.

The prime minister's remarks came during a week when the government has highlighted the corruption that lies behind a rash of poorly-completed construction programmes.

Mr Zhu said not a penny was to be misused in the Three Gorges dam project, which has already created controversy over its environmental impact.
