US stocks fell on Wednesday, ending an eight-day winning streak for the blue-chip Dow Jones index and the recent run-up in some of the market's hot cyberstocks. "There seemed to be some last minute unwinding of positions before the end of the year," said Kenneth Ducey, director of trading at BT Brokerage. The Dow shed 46.34 points, or 0.5% to closeat at 9,274.64. Among the bigger drops in the index were shares of Merck & Co., off 2-1/4 at 148-13/16. Trading volume was moderate, with roughly 600 million shares changing hands. The technology-heavy Nasdaq index dropped 14.83 points, or 0.68% to 2,166.94, with some of the sharper losses in the group coming from high-flying Internet companies that had racked up huge gains in recent days. |
