US lawmakers say China technology transfers harmed national security

A United States Congressional Committee investigating American technology transfers to China has concluded that the sharing of satellite and missile expertise has harmed national security.

The chairman of the House of Representatives select committee, Christopher Cox, said the transfer of sensitive technology went beyond the few instances known to the public.

The committee began with an inquiry into the Clinton administration's satellite export dealings with China, and whether the president's actions compromised security.

But Mr Cox indicated that the partly classified report also examined the relationship between the United States and China over the last two decades.

The committee makes 38 recommendations for legislation and executive action to remedy the situation.
