1999 New Year honours

The New Year honours' list is an opportunity for the United Kingdom to celebrate the great, the good and those who have achieved for the nation. This year's list places heavy emphasis on "those who have helped give peace a chance" in Northern Ireland but does not forget nearly 1,000 Britons from politicians to school caretakers.

Peace pioneers
Former prime minister John Major and those who helped in the wake of the Omagh bombing are recognised for their work in peace process.

Sporting heroes
Read about the world champion motor racing boss who battled against tragedy, England's leading wicket taker of 1998, the flamboyant featherweight who is Britain's most high-profile Asian sportsman and rival football stars who are both national heroes.

Seeing stars
Dusty Springfield and Tom Jones, Nigel Hawthorne and Roger Moore plus an overall round-up of entertainment honours.

A signal from space
The woman who discovered the first pulsar in space is among the many scientists recognised in this year's honour's list.

Making the grade
A Life peerage for college principal plus lollipop ladies, university principals and school caretakers. A full list here.

Healthy rewards
Awards in health go to the first woman on the British Dental Council and a new Florence Nightingale. Plus a round-up of other health honourees.

Business gears up
The car industry hits the road with honourees ranging from the Ford Motor Company boss Sir Alexander Trotman plus Nissan Europe vice-president Ian Gibson.

There's more than one way to get a gong
You too could make the honours list - especially if you're a charitable cabby, record breaking caravan enthusiast, a prison organist or kind to blackfaced sheep.
