1999 New Year honours
The New Year honours' list is an opportunity for the United Kingdom to celebrate the great, the good and those who have achieved for the nation. This year's list places heavy emphasis on "those who have helped give peace
a chance" in Northern Ireland but does not forget nearly 1,000 Britons from politicians to school caretakers.
Peace pioneers
Former prime minister John Major and those who helped in the wake of the Omagh bombing are recognised for their work in peace process.
There's more than one way to get a gong
You too could make the honours list - especially if you're a charitable cabby, record breaking caravan enthusiast, a prison organist or kind to blackfaced sheep.
