German radio quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Erdmann giving the news of the release. A German embassy official in Sana'a said: "We have received the news, but we are still waiting to see our four citizens." The ministry wants to fly the three women and one man to Germany on Wednesday night, but gave no further details. The German ambassador to Yemen had been negotiating over the last few days via intermediaries with the tribe that was holding the four people hostage, the radio added. They were abducted on 6 December in the eastern province of Marib. German diplomats had warned the Yemeni authorities not to attempt to rescue the German hostages, following the deaths of three British hostages and one Australian in a shoot-out between kidnappers and Yemeni troops. Germany has joined the United Kingdom and Australia in warning its citizens not to travel to Yemen. |
