The Peruvian Congress has approved a controversial plan for the development of the Amazon after a marathon session.

The plan aims to promote investment by granting tax benefits to businesses operating in the region.

The government has agreed to extend the benefits to other forest areas in what correspondents describe as an attempt to defuse discontent with the recent border treaty with Ecuador.
