A firefighter injured his leg during the incident
More than 30,000 homes were left without power after a fire at an electricity sub station in Wolverhampton.

Around 50 firefighters were called to the blaze at the Bilston sub station in Willenhall Road at 0645GMT on Tuesday.

Homes in Wednesbury, Willenhall and Wolverhampton were left without power following the fire which involved an oil leak.

A firefighter injured his leg during the incident and dozens of workers had to be rescued from lifts after the power supply was cut off.

Safe area

Firefighters were at the scene for several hours and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Power distribution company Acquila and the gas board were called to the site to isolate the electrical supply.

A West Midlands fire service spokesman said the fire had been well contained.

He said: "One firefighter from Dudley fire station suffered a leg injury during the incident and was taken to New Cross Hospital.

"His injury is not life-threatening."
