The German Foreign Ministry has warned its citizens against visiting Yemen.
The ministry said it was optimistic that a peaceful solution could be achieved in the effort to release four Germans who were kidnapped in Yemen three weeks ago.
A Ministry spokesman Martin Erdmann said the German President, Roman Herzog, had sent a letter to his Yemeni counterpart, Ali Abdullah Salih, advising against the use of force in any attempt to free the hostages.
