Domi flies in for Magpies

Newcastle have conceded seven goals during the Christmas period

French defender Didier Domi has joined Newcastle United in a £4m deal.

The 20-year-old left back moved from Paris St Germain to St James' Park for an initial £3.25m, with an extra £750,000 linked to the number of appearances he makes for the Magpies.

Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit, turning his attention to a leaky defence after bolstering his attack with Duncan Ferguson, was delighted with the signature of the French youth international.

"He is a very good positional player," said Gullit, who had trailed Domi for a month. "In England that is something we are not used to, because in England people want to have players who can tackle and run.

Freddie Shepherd: "They didn't want to sell him" (BBC Radio 5 Live)
"But it's also important to have the right position, because if you are in the right position you don't have to tackle.

"He's also a French youth international and that means he's someone who has certain international experience, and that's what we want."

Out of favour

Domi, who joins on a four-and-a-half-year contract, will go straight into the squad for the Premiership clash with title-chasing Chelsea on January 9.

He had been out of favour at PSG since the arrival of new manager Artur Jorge, and he sees the move as an ideal opportunity to prove his worth.

"The Premier League is very good and the truth will be shown when I play," he said. "It's there that you will see my true worth.

"I hope this season will go well because there are some very good players here and Newcastle is a great side."

Gullit will be hoping Domi brings some rapid improvement to his back line, after conceding seven goals in two games over the Christmas period.
