'We're as good as the Aussies'

Gough (left) told Dickie Bird that England thought they could win

Dickie Bird flew out to Australia at just the right moment. The former Test umpire was in Melbourne to see England's amazing victory for himself.

This is his view from the MCG boundary, exclusive to BBC News Online.

I said before I left England on 23 December that we had two Tests in which we had everything to play for, and I was proved right.

We can level the series now and people will then say England have a very good team.

It was a tremendous performance in Melbourne. The catch by Ramprakash was one of the finest I have ever seen. That was the turning point.

We're as good

Now England believe in themselves and I am sure we're as good as Australia. The Aussies only have one world class bowler and that's McGrath.

In Sydney I feel the pitch will take spin, and England should go in with two spinners.

It would have been nice if we had a Tufnell here, but I would play Such ahead of Croft because I feel the Essex player is more of an attacking bowler than the Welshman.

It's sad to say but I'm afraid I would drop Angus Fraser and I think he will be the unlucky one who has to make way for a spinner.

It could mean Angus has played his last Test but we've said that before and he has come bouncing back.

After his recall to the squad. we shall see if Warne really does play in this Test, but this next toss will be crucial.

If Alec Stewart finally gets lucky then his side have to make a big score, say 450 runs. Then he can place men around the bat and attack.

Belief vs hurt pride

I had a chat with Darren Gough on the eve of the final day in Melbourne and he said the team believed they could win that match. This is the belief they must take into the fifth Test.

But be warned. The Aussies believe they were lazy and over confident at Melbourne, and knowing them they will come bouncing back.

As for me, I have been having a wonderful time over here meeting some of the great players who I've umpired over.

People such as the Chappell brothers, Ian and Greg, Doug Walters and others always give me a warm reception.

England's victory has created a tremendous amount of interest throughout Australia. Sydney will be packed for the final Test match. I can't wait.
