Wednesday, December 30, 1998 Published at 20:08 GMT World: Americas Che's comrades buried Thousands of people attended the burial in Cuba of ten guerrillas who fought alongside Che Guevara. Their remains were returned from Bolivia where they diedin an attempt to spread a Marxist revolution. Among them was a German woman who became famous as Tania the Guerrilla. The ceremony took place with military honours in the central town of Santa Clara, where Guevara is buried. It marks the fortieth anniversary of the Battle of Santa Clara, in which Guevara's forces defeated the Cuban army of President Batista. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
