Wednesday, December 30, 1998 Published at 09:31 GMT World: South Asia Indian government to investigate attacks on Christians A team of Indian government investigators has arrived in the state of Gujurat to look into a recent series of attacks on Christians. There's been growing criticism of the state government, which has been accused of not doing enough to protect the minority Christian community. There were clashes at the weekend between Christians and Hindu extremists following attacks on several buildings on Christmas day, including churches, schools and hospitals. The Christian community says the violence directed at it has increased since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party came to power last March. The BJP leadership have consistently condemned the violence. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
