Talking Point

Will the euro inevitably lead to a European superstate?

Talking Point joins this week with BBC World Service Radio's Europewide to discuss the likely effect of European Monetary Union.

From Frankfurt to Florence, Faro to Finland, "Euroland" is born in 1999 with the launch of the single European currency, the euro.

Eleven countries are taking the euro - but where is the euro taking Europe?

Will the urge - and the need - to harmonise policy stop at monetary union? Is the euro but a first step towards economic and then full political convergence in Europe?

Joining Mark Reid for the New Year Europewide debate are three European journalists - Jacki Davis in Brussels, the German broadcaster Thomas Schreiber and from Seville in Spain Ana Romero.

Listen to the debate (audio available New Year's Eve)

What do you think?

Will the euro inevitably lead to a European superstate?
