Wei Jingsheng meets Taiwanese president

A leading critic of the Chinese government, the exiled dissident, Wei Jingsheng, has had talks in Taiwan with President Lee Teng-hui.

Mr Wei said Mr Lee expressed strong support for efforts to promote democratic reform in China.

A presidential statement following the talks gave no details of the discussions, but it said that Mr Lee praised Mr Wei's sacrifice and contribution in promoting democracy and human rights.

Mr Wei has been warmly received by the Taiwanese government during his visit to Taiwan, which the Beijing government regards as a breakaway province of China.
