A number of European countries have been marking Armistice Day, when a truce was signed by the Allies and Germany in 1918, bringing World War I to an end.
Dozens of surviving veterans attended the ceremony in Paris marking the end of violence 84 years ago
There was tight security for the appearance of President Chirac following an assassination attempt in July
Some 10,000 spectators gathered in Paris to watch the ceremony traditionally held along the Champs Elysees
Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, himself the subject of a stabbing earlier this year, made his first official appearance
In Scotland, a gun is fired to mark the start of a two-minute silence at Edinburgh Castle
Britain traditionally observes two minutes' silence for its war dead on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month
This year is also the 20th anniversary of the conflict between Britain and Argentina
