Tuesday, December 29, 1998 Published at 09:27 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Singaporean opposition leader defies rally rules A Singapore opposition leader, Chee Soon Juan has staged a rare, illegal public meeting to criticise the government. Mr Chee, who's a leader of the Singapore Democratic Party, said he was forced to hold the gathering illegally because the authorities refused or delayed his requests to organise public meetings. A small crowd gathered to hear Mr Chee attack the government on a range of issues, including its handling of Singapore's economic problems. After the meeting the police summoned Mr Chee for an interview, but he refused to attend. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
