Falklands hero honoured by village
Plaque
The plaque commemorating Kingswear's adopted son
A memorial dedicated to a Falklands War hero has been unveiled in south Devon.

The residents of Kingswear produced a plaque in memory of Lieutenant Colonel H Jones.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross after he was killed storming an Argentine machine gun trench at Goose Green in 1982.

Colonel Jones was brought up by his parents in Kingswear and was known to love the village.

The plaque, situated on the Lower Ferry slipway, was unveiled by his brother - retired naval commander Tim Jones.

His widow Sara, and other members of his family were also present at the Armistice Day ceremony.

The Jones' family has maintained a home in Kingswear for more than 60 years.

Mrs Jones said: "Of all the things that have been done in memory of my husband, this is probably the most poignant.

"This is a place that he really loved."

Led battalion

Colonel Jones served in the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment for 20 years before being made commanding officer of the Second Battalion, The Parachute Regiment.

He was leading the battalion into battle when he died, aged 41.

Officers and buglers from both regiments were at the ceremony.

Retired commander Jones said: "He was a rather shy man and you would see a slight smirk on his face from time to time.

"But he loved Kingswear so much.

"He would have been slightly surprised by this, but absolutely delighted."
