Homes evacuated after fire
Firefighters
It took five hours to bring the fire under control
Up to 20 people were evacuated from their homes after fire broke out on an industrial estate in Greater Manchester.

At its height in the early hours of Monday, 70 firefighters were tackling the fire at four factory units in Linnett Close, Longsight.

Residents from nearby Lamb Street were forced to leave their homes after the fire broke out at about 0230 GMT. They were later allowed to return home.

Roads in the area were expected to be closed to traffic until Monday afternoon.

Traffic diversions

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service said the efforts of crews had saved 50% of the building.

She said: "Three appliances were initially sent to the scene, but it quickly became clear that fire was going to need more crews to bring under control.

"Roads are closed in the Stockport Road area and traffic congestion is to be expected."

She said the fire was brought under control just after 0530 GMT.

Stockport Road was closed between Plymouth Grove and Devonshire Street and police put diversions in place.

A multi-agency investigation has begun into the cause of the fire.
