Village calls for bomb dead tribute
Poppy
The villagers' names were added to the war memorial
A campaign has begun for special tribute for 11 people - including two babies - who were killed in a World War II air raid.

The raid happened in Tupton, near Chesterfield in Derbyshire, on 15 March 1941.

Their names are already included on the two village war memorials.

But there are also plans for a commemorative garden or book.

Among those who died was the mother of Beulah Rhodes who was six when one of the bombs ripped through the family home.

Last words

She told BBC Radio Derby: "I can just remember waking up and seeing the stars in the sky.

"It was bright and the room was dark and I must have started to cry.

"My mum turned over and put her arm over me and said don't be frightened and that was the last I ever heard her say."

It is thought the bomber was either discarding spare bombs or trying to bomb a train which was passing on tracks near the village.

Councillor Graham Pass, from North East Derbyshire District Council, is asking local people how they would like to commemorate the 11 dead.

"We are trying to contact people in the area who may have relatives who died in the incident to get the information before it disappears."
