High turnout for Iran poll registration

The authorities in Iran say at least thirty-thousand people have put themselves forward as candidates for nationwide local elections -- on the first day of registration.

The process continues for another week.

The local elections will be the first since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and are being seen as a contest between conservatives and reformists who support President Khatami.

The Interior Ministry will choose which candidates will be allowed to stand.
