Police investigate road deaths
Police tape
Police are appealing for information about the incidents
A man and a woman have died after being hit by a car in north-east England.

A passing taxi driver discovered the couple dead on the roadside in the early hours of Sunday.

They were found next to the A1231 near junction with the A195 in Washington, Tyne and Wear.

Northumbria Police say they have since traced a car and arrested a 22-year-old woman in connection with the incident.

She has been bailed to return to the police station next month.

Head injuries

A spokesman said: "The taxi driver at first thought they were unconscious but they were found to be deceased.

"They had both been struck by a car which was no longer at the scene.

"We are now pursuing lines of inquiry with a view to identifying the two people who died."

Meanwhile, police are appealing for information after a man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in Newcastle.

The incident happened at 1700 GMT on Saturday at the Kenton Bar roundabout when a Rover Metro hit the pedestrian.

The man is receiving treatment for head injuries at Newcastle General Hospital.
