Monday, December 28, 1998 Published at 10:29 GMT World: Europe Talks resume on Turkey coalition ![]() Instability: Turkey has had a month of political impasse Turkey's Prime Minister-designate is beginning fresh talks aimed at forming a coalition government more than a month after the outgoing Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz lost a parliamentary vote of confidence over allegations of links to crime organisations.
The party, the largest in parliament, has remained in opposition because Turkish secularists, including the military, objected to its religious stance. The previous Prime Minister-designate, Bulent Ecevit, failed in his attempt to form a secularist coalition government. He is also expected to hold talks with Mr Erez. Speaking before the talks began, Mr Erez said that he believed he was "up to the challenge" of forming a new government and solving the political impasse in the country.
He said he was aiming to build a broad-based coalition to take Turkey to its general election in April 1999, taking place almost two years ahead of schedule. Reports suggest that the Virtue Party would only enter an Erez government if the number of pro-Islamic ministers he appoints is proportionate to the number of seats the party holds in Parliament. |
