Monday, December 28, 1998 Published at 13:59 GMT World: South Asia Sectarian violence in India Police in the west Indian state of Gujarat say they've arrested a number of people after violence between Hindu extremists and Christians. There have been clashes over the weekend following violence on Christmas Day when buildings, including schools, hospitals, and churches were attacked. The Christian community say the attacks are part of a concerted campaign against them which has worsened since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party came to power in Delhi in March. However the BJP leadership has consistently condemned the violence. The Chief Secretary of Gujarat and the Director-General of police have been summoned to appear before India's minorities commission to explain why the Christian population has not been protected..
