Rugby star Roy Powell dies

Powell is the second Rochdale player to die in two months

Former Great Britain rugby league star Roy Powell has died after collapsing on the way to a training session.

The 33-year-old front-row forward, who represented Leeds, Bradford, Featherstone and Batley, was travelling to a training morning with his new club Rochdale Hornets when he is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Powell won 19 caps for Great Britain between 1985-91.

He leaves wife Helen, son Lewis, aged four, and seven-month-old daughter Melissa.

He is the second Rochdale player to have died suddenly in the last two months. Karl Marriott also died after collapsing on 30 October.
