The Comoran government has warned of the possibility of civil war on the breakaway island of Anjouan.

It said in a statement that all the ingredients were present for an outbreak of war between the island's rural and urban people.

The statement has been dismissed as alarmist by supporters of rival groups on the island.

An uneasy ceasefire is holding after heavy fighting.
