New party in Chittagong Hill tracts

A new party has been formed in the the Chittagong Hill tracts in south-eastern Bangladesh, to protest against the peace deal signed a year ago between the government and the tribal group, Jana Sanghati Samiti.

The new party, called the United People's Democratic Front, says that it will oppose the Samiti'sefforts to justify the peace accord and will continue to struggle for regional autonomy.

The peace treaty tried to ensure preference for the tribal people, mainly Chakmas, in a new administration for the region, and paved the way for the return of tribal land occupied illegally by settlers.
