A Sudanese newspaper has reported that the defence minister has pardoned one-hundred-and-sixty-three soldiers who had been serving various prison terms.

The newspaper said Lieutenant General Ibrahim Sulieman released the men following an appeal by their families for clemency during the holy month of Ramadan.

The soldiers had been jailed for non-political reasons.
