Motorway chaos as two killed
Traffic jam generic
Police expect the motorway to re-open at 1600 GMT
Massive tailbacks built up on the M1 after a horrific three-lorry pile-up claimed the lives of two motorists.

The crash near junction 11 in Bedfordshire left two others seriously injured and caused the closure of the motorway's southbound carriageway for almost 12 hours.

Blocked since 0400 GMT on Saturday, it only reopened at 1600 GMT.

One man was thrown through the front windscreen of his lorry and out onto the road when two HGVs collided early Saturday morning.

Police advice

The driver and passenger of a third lorry were both killed when their vehicle collided with the other two.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Ambulance Service said the injured were rushed to the Luton and Dunstable hospital.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the incident and any witnesses are urged to come forward.
