At lunch New Zealand had been one-hundred-and-thirty-two for three but lost four wickets between lunch and tea to the medium pace bowling of Javagal Srinath and the leg-spin of Anil Kumble. In Melbourne, England were all out for two-hundred-and-seventy on the second day of the fourth Ashes Test against Australia, after rain prevented play on the first day.
