Army chief says ULFA activities are down

The Indian Army chief, V.P.Malik, says while the activities of the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam ULFA have decreased because of lack of popular support, the tribal Bodo separatist groups have stepped up their violence.

General Malik said he was prepared to hold talks with the groups, but ruled out declaring a ceasefire.

He said that law and order in the state of Assam had improved, but refused to speculate how long the army would continue its operations there.
