Pakistan no to moratorium on producing nuclear material

The Pakistani foreign minister, Sartaj Aziz, says his country will not agree to a moratorium on producing nuclear material.

He told the National Assembly that Pakistan had security concerns over what he called unequal global and regional stockpiles.

He said the United States and other Western countries were seeking an early moratorium before a treaty could be concluded.

Mr Aziz also said Pakistan viewed any treaty aimed at only preventing further proliferation as discriminatory - instead it favoured one that would promote nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
