It's Bleakburn for Henchoz

Stephane Henchoz (left): It's grim up north

Blackburn defender Stephane Henchoz has lashed out at his club and its local area, making it quite clear he wishes he was elsewhere.

The Swiss international is likely to have some explaining to do to manager Brian Kidd for his comments in the Daily Mail which portray Blackburn as a cultural and sporting backwater.

"World-class players from overseas don't choose to come here, they go to London instead." the 24-year-old was quoted as saying.

"It always seems to be pitch dark by 3.30pm in Blackburn. There is no language school, nor is there a fitness centre. And if you want to go shopping, there is nothing to buy." he added.

The central defender, signed by former manager Roy Hodgson, has been one of Rovers' more consistent performers over the last year, but his comments are unlikely to enhance his reputation.

He also gave a very clear hint that he intends to move away from the struggling Lancashire outfit as soon as he feels the time is right.

"I expect my next club will be in southern Europe, although Manchester United wouldn't frighten me nowadays. I could make an impression anywhere I want."

Despite his comments, Henchoz is likely to figure in Saturday's match against league leaders Aston Villa at Ewood Park.

Manager Kidd has enough headaches at the moment without Henchoz's controversial remarks.

There has also been speculation that Chris Sutton is to leave the club and move to London with either Spurs or Arsenal.
