Kenya one step closer to new constitution

The President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi, has signed into law a parliamentary Act establishing a commission to help review the existing constitution.

The twenty-five members of the commission who will work alongside two other groupswill include representatives of political parties, women's organisations and religious groups.

The call for a new constitution has been one of the main opposition demands in the lead-up to last year's general election.

Following his return to power, Mr Moi promised a review, and the attorney general Amos Wako said that if everything went according to plan the new constitution could be in place by the year 2001.
