Mexican prisoners riot

Several hundred policemen are surrounding a prison in Mexico City where a group of inmates have overpowered guards and taken hostages.

The Mexican news agency said the prisoners at the Reclusorio Sur prison had managed to disarm some guards during Christmas visiting hours and were demanding their freedom in exchange for the hostages.

Several hundred visitors were evacuated from the building as police fired teargas in an effort to quell the disturbance.
