A South Korean couple have been arrested for trying to defect to the communist North.

South Korean police said the couple were wanted on fraud charges, and had fled the country in l993.

The police said that while hiding in Singapore the pair had contacted North Korean embassy officials to arrange their defection via Beijing.

They were arrested on an Interpol warrant in Malaysia as they tried to board a flight to the Chinese capital.
