India succumb to Doull

Simon Doull - made the most of helpful conditions

Paceman Simon Doull took a career-best seven for 65 as New Zealand enjoyed the best of the opening day of the second Test in Wellington.

The tourists were dismissed for 208 with the only major resistance coming from skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, who made 103 not out - his 21st Test century.

In reply, the Kiwis were 52 for one at close.

Doull's swing wrecked India's top order after the tourists had elected to bat. In one spell he took four wickets for just seven runs in 27 balls as the tourists slumped to 16 for four.

Sachin Tendulkar and Azharuddin looked to have steadied the ship, adding 82 for the fifth wicket. But Doull got the crucial wicket of Tendulkar for 47 after lunch.

But as the tail folded, Azharuddin treated the 9,000 crowd at Basin Reserve to a thrilling display of strokes.

His century came in 210 minutes with the second 50 taking just 60 balls.

Matthew Horne and Stephen Fleming ensured a respectable reply for New Zealand after the early loss of Matthew Bell to Venkatesh Prasad for four.

Azharuddin said: "The wicket did a bit in the first hour and a half. I give credit to Simon who bowled very well.

"When you bowl like that there isn't much one can do. No complaints - they all got out to good balls. He bowled an outstanding line and length."

Doull said: "The onus was on the three seamers and it happened to be my day.

"It was one of those days you felt good. The ball did a lot more through the air than off the pitch but I think there is plenty for the spinners from day three."

The first Test in Dunedin was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
