Saturday, December 26, 1998 Published at 02:35 GMT World: South Asia Nepal PM forms new cabinet ![]() Nepali voters will face another election within four months The Prime Minister of Nepal, Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala, has announced an 11-member cabinet, one day after he was sworn in as the head of a three-party centre-left coalition.
Mr. Koirala inducted four ministers from his own party, the centrist Nepali Congress, and another four from the Nepal Communist Party, United Marxist-Leninist (UML). One minister comes from the regional Nepal Sadbhavna Party. For the first time in eight years, a King's nominee has also been included in the cabinet. Mr. Koirala has kept the foreign and the defence ministries to himself. He has retained three ministers of the outgoing minority government of the Nepali Congress, including the Home Minister, Govinda Raj Joshi. The Nepal Communist Party (UML) has been given the key portfolios of finance and water resources.
Mr. Koirala was reappointed Prime Minister after the Nepal Communist Party (UML) and the Nepal Sadbhavana Party decided to back him as the head of the new coalition, on condition that he will call fresh elections. Mr. Koirala earlier led a minority government of the Nepali Congress for eight months before stepping down on Monday, to clear way for a new coalition. |
