Police play Santa to burglary boy

Jordan received Action Man toys

Kind-hearted police have played Santa to a four-year-old boy whose presents were stolen by burglars on Christmas Eve.

Thieves broke into Jordan Jeffreys' home in Bradford while he was out with his mother Claire and took all his presents.

When the crime was reported, staff in the West Yorkshire Police control room sprang into action and persauded the manager of a local Asda store to donate gifts for the youngster.

The supermarket opened its doors at 2am on Christmas morning for the sole purpose of supplying Jordan with presents.

The store donated Action Man toys and accessories plus a giant sports car toy.

Police officers then delivered the toys to Jordan on Christmas morning.

Inspector David Campbell, of Odsal police station, Bradford, said: "Obviously we're disgusted that somebody has stolen a child's Christmas presents, but we're delighted at the response we had from the local Asda."

'Delighted'

"We just thought we would see what we could pull together for the little boy", he said.

"His mother and grandmother were upset and disgusted about the theft, but delighted that the presents were replaced.

"Our staff that were working really felt for the family. They have children of their own and knew how they would feel if something like this happened to them."

After Jordan had opened his presents, his mother Claire said: "When we got home last night the burglars had not left a thing untouched.

"I don't know how anyone can steal a child's Christmas presents but it's just great that everyone has rallied round to help.

"I can't express how I felt this morning when I heard what the police and Asda had done. It's beyond words. I was crying my eyes out.

"What big hearts people have when it comes to children.

"Jordan was ecstatic when the police brought the presents round this morning. It has really brought the Christmas spirit back into our home."

Sergeant Dave Hunter, who delivered the gifts, added: "Jordan's eyes popped out when we arrived.

"I've missed my children opening their presents this morning so to see Jordan with his was brilliant. It restores your faith in human nature."
