Bombay barmaids on strike


Tens of thousands of barmaids in the Indian city of Bombay have gone on an indefinite strike, dampening Christmas revelries in the city.

Their union says they are demanding better working conditions.

It says bar-owners often keep back a sizeable amount of the tips earned by dancing girls and waitresses - and beat them up if they seek better jobs elsewhere.
