Rwanda 'not backing UNITA'

Rwanda has dismissed reports that it's supporting the rebel UNITA movement in the renewed conflict against government forces in Angola.

A foreign ministry statement said Rwanda was seriously concerned about the fighting and accused UNITA of starting it.

Earlier this week, Angolan officials in the capital, Luanda, said there was evidence that UNITA was being assisted by the Rwandan and Ugandan armies.

Following allegations by UNITA, military representatives from Namibia and Zimbabwe have also denied that their troops had entered Angola in support of government forces.
