Driver arrested after road smash

A man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs after a pile-up in which two people died and 10 others were injured.

The BBC's Rachael Payne: "The two vehicles collided head-on"
Derbyshire police said the 30-year-old was arrested after the crash on the A6 between Rowsley and Bakewell on Wednesday.

At least one vehicle caught fire. A police spokesman said the two died when two vehicles collided head-on.

Other motorists stopped to help and the arrested driver is thought to have been involved in a later collision involving a further four vehicles.

The spokesman said two of the injured were in a critical, but stable condition in hospital with a further two casualties seriously injured. Six people received minor injuries.

Some casualties were struck by cars after leaving their vehicles to help other victims, said the spokesman.

One of the dead was named as Paul Fern, 32, of Alfreton, Derbyshire.
