Pakistan slams Indo-Russian deal

Pakistan has strongly criticised a big arms deal between India and Russia that will extend their military co-operation well into the next century.

Pakistan said it was gravely concerned by the pact, signed on Monday: it spoke of using all available means to build up its own military capability in response.

The deal will allow India to make big arms purchases from Moscow over the next ten years.

Pakistan said this would introduce significant new weapons to South Asia, including nuclear-powered submarines.

It said the United Nations should take note of what it called this dangerous development.

India says the pact does not pose any greater threat to regional stability.
