Four die in Culkin blaze

Macaulay's family 'sad' about the tragedy

The family of Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin, fled in terror when a blaze that started in their Manhattan apartment left four people dead.

The fire broke out in two connected apartments, where Macaulay's mother, Patricia Brentrup and several of his siblings live.

According to reports the victims; three women and one man, died of smoke inhalation. Twenty people, including four firemen sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is not considered suspicious. A space heater was removed from the scene, and investigators are trying to determine whether it contributed to the fire.

Macaulay, 18, lived in the building for several years before moving out following his June wedding to actress Rachel Miner.

Spokesperson for the family, Paul Bloch said: "I can only tell you they're all safe. He added that they family was very sad about the tragedy."

Superstar Cher has been chosen to open the Harrods New Year sale, a year after she had to pull out following the sudden death of her first husband.

Cher, 53, whose single Believe was the year's biggest seller, cancelled the event last year after Sonny Bono was killed in a skiing accident.

Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed will give her a guided tour of the bargains when she arrives to open the sale at the famous London store on 6 January.

Woody Harrelson who shot to fame in the hit US series Cheers, is due to make his first-ever guest appearance in the sitcom's spin-off, Frasier.

Harrelson played the dim but loveable barman Woody. Then went on to star in a string of major movies, his credits include Natural Born Killers, Indecent Proposal and Palmetto.

Being asked to appear on Frasier is a 'exciting' the actor admitted.

"I can't tell you how happy that makes me. Woody Boyd is still the favourite role I've ever played," said the star.

Actor/Producer David Hasselhoff is planning a world-wide chain of Baywatch Restaurant Cafes and Nightclubs, based on the popular drama series.

The Baywatch supremo will be initially employing waiters and waitresses. Apart from possessing silver service skills, staff will be hired on the basis of their "movie star looks."

If you get hired, you will also get an opportunity to try out for a role on Baywatch, the show that made Pamela Anderson a star and a multi-millionaire.

Boyzone's triumph in the Record Of The Year competition has given their single No Matter What a huge Xmas sales boost.

The band won the title in a phone poll of over 1m ITV viewers at the weekend, attracting over 25% of the votes.

HMV stores report a five-fold increase in album sales and new interest in the single, which was a hit back in August.

The single sparked a row over chart manipulation when it left the Top 40 to make room for a new Boyzone hit.

Grumpy Old Men star Jack Lemmon Hollywood veteran has said goodbye to hangovers, by no longer drinking spirits.

Lemmon, 73, said he was afraid he had the potential for a drinking problem because he was "by nature compulsive", and he had noticed himself, "taking too many long lunches between projects."

The two-time Oscar-winning actor says he is fighting fit these days, and about to start filming a remake of the 1960 movie classic, Inherit the Wind.

Vampires star James Woods has launched a vicious attack on the US President, a week after a string of stars rallied to Bill Clinton's defence.

"He's a certified liar, a card-carrying liar, and lying is the cancer at the base of the spine of every crime ever committed. This guy is a ... sociopath. I'm ashamed to be a Democrat," he said.

But stars such as Barbra Streisand, Jack Nicholson, and Ted Danson have all declared their support of Clinton.


Stereophonic attacker jailed

A man who attacked Stereophonics guitarist Richard Jones outside his local pub has been jailed for 12 months.

The 23-year-old guitarist suffered a broken nose as well as rib and finger injuries when he was assaulted by Robert Baker, just minutes after leaving the rest of the group, a Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard.

According to Prosecutor Christopher Williams, Baker raced out into the street after mistakenly thinking the rock star had damaged his mother's car.

The Baker a 29-year-old salesman launched a "prolonged and brutal" attack on the guitarist outside The Rock pub at Aberaman, near Aberdare.

"He suffered multiple injuries to his face and body. He was left with swollen eyes and was bleeding from the nose and mouth" said Prosecutor Christopher Williams.

The court was told Mr Jones was unable to defend himself after drinking heavily following a world tour.

Baker, married with a young child, admitted to inflicting grievous bodily harm on the rock star. Leuan Morris, defending, said: "He was guilty of appalling conduct and is full of remorse."
