Sailor tempted by Wasps move

Wendell Sailor - a handful for defences in both codes

Australian rugby league star Wendell Sailor is keen to continue his union career next season with one of England's top clubs.

The winger has scored 11 tries in nine games for Second Division Leeds but is interested in joining a London team if the Yorkshire club fails to win promotion.

"I'm hoping that somehow Leeds will get into the First Division next season and, if so, I'd love to come back," the 24-year-old said.

"If not, maybe I could play for one of the First Division clubs, Wasps or Saracens, anything is possible. I've spoken to some guys from Wasps and they said I should come back next year and play in London."

Sailor is playing for Leeds as an amateur after the Rugby Football Union turned down his application for a work permit.

"They're a good-natured bunch and Phil Davies is a really great coach. He knows about playing all-year round and doesn't push me too much. I don't really go 100 miles an hour on the training paddock like I would back home in Brisbane," he added.

Leeds raided rugby league again on Christmas Eve by signing Bradford Bulls wing Jon Scales, who has agreed a deal tying him to the club until the year 2000.

The English Rugby Partnership is, meanwhile, believed to have docked Leeds four points for playing Sailor before his registration was accepted but the club has yet to be officially notified.

"We've not received a letter yet, so it's difficult to comment but if it's true that we've been deducted four points it's fairly likely that we would appeal," said chief executive Gary Hetherington.

"We feel we have a strong case. We did everything we could and all along took professional advice."

Sailor reverts to the 13-a-side game over the festive period by playing for Leeds Rhinos against Halifax on Boxing Day and Castleford on January 1.
