A herd of elephants has stampeded through a village in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, killing four children and an adult.

Some sixty elephants ran amok, crushing a number of huts.

Police say it could have been in reaction to the killing of a baby elephant, knocked down by a train a few days ago.

Or, they say, the elephants might have been hungry, with food scarce as a result of this year's severe flooding.
